Eskom CEO sees SA gas as key in transition from coal

Eskom favours burning more domestically sourced gas as it transitions away from coal, its Chief Executive Officer Andre de Ruyter said.

With the structure of the nation’s demand changing and more renewable technology being added to the grid, additional storage in the form of batteries will be needed along with power that can be dispatched on demand, De Ruyter told a conference in Cape Town on Friday.

Kinetiko’s Amersfoort Gas-to-Power Project is set to kick off following Korhaan project drilling success and licence approval.

Kinetiko Energy Ltd (ASX:KKO) is steadily advancing its portfolio containing one of the world’s largest onshore contingent gas resources of 4.9 Tcf (trillion cubic feet) in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa.

The company, which is focused on shallow conventional gas and coal bed methane (CBM) opportunities, is in the process of aggressively expanding exploration throughout its 7,000 square kilometres of exploration rights to increase gas reserves.

First South African commercial gas project comes online

JSE-listed company Renergen has announced that the Virginia Gas Project plant in the Free State is operational and will begin delivery to customers. The plant is South Africa’s first commercial liquified natural gas (LNG) station.

‘Watershed moment’

“This watershed moment in the company’s life cycle has finally arrived. This is a significant step on the path to showing the world that Renegen can become a global player in liquid helium supply and a material local supplier of much-needed LNG,” chief executive Stefano Marani said.
